PHOTOGRAPHER: Tim Flach

Tim Flach was born in London in 1958 and studied fine art at Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design. After focusing on photography, he has gone on to see his work win numerous awards and be exhibited and discussed around the world. He is best known for the originality that he brings to capturing animal behaviour and characteristics. In this, he is often exploring the close relationship between animals and humans, in particular how humanity imposes and reveals its ideals when trying to understand and work with animals.

He seems to be one of the few  nature /animal/wildlife photographers that are willing to talk about their work and the thoughts that precede the images. (Maybe they all do and I haven't looked.) He attempts many things in his ambiguous animal images: to suggest our kinship through the similarities in gesture to alien seeming creatures like bats. He wants to challenge our expectations of reality by placing animals outside their context. He also places a great deal of importance on the visual structure of his images and his photographs are as or more driven by design principles, than they are by their subjects. For this he tends to use exceptionally controlled environments in which he photographs these animals. The other reason for this is perhaps an obsession with detail evident in his shots. Design and detail dominate his visual style.

His work had been exhibited in the U.K., China, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, U.A.E., and U.S. An exhibition/book launch for Flach’s latest book, Equus, is planned for October 2008. His photography has been published in Creative Review, Sunday Times Magazine, The Observer, Harper’s Magazine, National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Photo District News, Domus and Eyemazing. Flach has been honored by D&AD, American Photography, Photo District News, Communications Arts, Creative Review, the Association of Photographers, the Clio Awards, Cannes Lions, International Photography Awards and Art Directors Club.
